Innovation.........Toronto goes high tech for World Pride 2014

proud of the village: parklets

The Church Wellesley Village Business Improvement Area launched Proud of The Village projects to prepare the neighbourhood for World Pride in 2014 and the Pan / Para Pan Am Games in 2015. Projects are being launched in partnership with the City of Toronto and Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam, the 519 Church Street Community Centre and the Church Street Mural Project. The first stage includes the installation of ‘parklets’ — temporary public places placed in existing parking spaces. The parklets meet the sidewalk grade to create a more walkable, accessible community with a variety of public spaces for passive use and active programming. The majority of these installations will be passive-use public realm enhancements with some of the installations serving as extended licensed patios for businesses in the community. The parklets are complemented by custom, landscaped planters and feature.

Queerstory – An innovative project to celebrate and map Toronto’s vibrant queer community using new technology. It’s a geo-locative walking tour app to be launched at World Pride, available for free download to anyone with a smartphone. The walking tour reveals 20 points of interest (POI) throughout downtown Toronto. Each POI locates significant historical, political and artistic events, which took place in the city’s queer community. The stories are revealed through 2-minute chapters of archival video, documentaries, interviews, and original audio/video montages. Culture, politics, art, comedy, civil rights, community activism and explorations of interactive locative storytelling all come together to put the contributions of Toronto’s queer community on the map.r own liner notes.
