superior it is said, never gives up her dead...
Enter, Night, by Michael Rowe; Published by ChiZine through HarperCollins Publishers; Available in Paperback (2012)
Enter, Night is more like three distinct novellas: 1) a meditation on the stifling, gothic insularity of small town life in Northern Ontario; 2) an uncanny, fascinating, evocative and quite chilling vampire novel in the best traditions of Stoker; 3) an extended epilogue/flashback that suggests Heart of Darkness, as a Jesuit Missionary in 1632 New France becomes a reluctant vampire hunter. The first part feels both over-long and burdened by a self-conscious author’s voice, but the second and third portions are cracking good reads. If you like a good vampire story, I strongly encourage you to forgive the uneven first part - the second half of the contemporary story and the epilogue novella are eminently worth while.
