Here Comes Fall
time to loosen up and relax
The sun has barely set on the final, official weekend of summer and already my mind is drifting ahead to thoughts of fall. No, I’m not a traitor to summer (What red-blooded Canadian could be?). Yet somehow, I find myself looking forward to the crisp autumn air that allows you to endlessly mix, match and layer all your comfy, cozy favorites for a look that’s totally unique. Those perfect few weeks between summer and winter when you can safely bust out all of your bright and shiny new fall favorites before they become savaged by the harsh, unforgiving, endlessly-changing climate of the great white north.
Just in case you’re not approaching the colder months to come with the same sense of naïve optimism that I am, no worries. I’m here to help get you organized with all of the latest trends you’ll need to tackle the changing seasons in style.
Orange Is Everything
Orange for fall, sounds simple enough doesn’t it? This isn’t your everyday, run of the mill orange. This is your PSL kicked into overdrive! This season’s best and boldest colors are as subtly complex as the ever-changing fall foliage. Pumpkin is dark and distinctive and perfectly pairs with other seasonal staples such as a rich chocolate brown, burgundy, navy and army green. The Fall 2016 shows were filled with burnt oranges, rusts and copper colors, seen on everything from dresses to duffle coats. It’s incredibly flattering and looks great on virtually every skin tone.
Whether you want to boldly bare your neck or cover it up, either way you’re sure to be regarded as super stylish and totally on trend. Fall is the perfect time of year to retreat deep inside all of your favorite chunky knits. This is one trend that lives on year after year and you can expect to see tons of turtle, roll and polo necks all season long. It’s the surefire way to layer up in a timeless classic.
On the flip side, many designers are encouraging fashionistas everywhere to bare the neck and make it a major focal point this season. During the fall shows, we saw the fashion elite embrace the bohemian off the shoulder look. This trend has seen a huge spike in both search and sales throughout 2016 with designers like Balenciaga showcasing dramatic blouses, bodysuits and dresses in a variety of bold colors and patterns including florals and stripes. Add even more drama with a light seasonal scarf or 90-s inspired choker.
Kick Back, Relax
Earlier this year, we saw the rise of the silk pajama shirt so it seems only fitting that this trend has evolved into a full matching set. Sleepwear as outerwear sounds slightly eccentric but it’s also totally wearable, so you may not want to write this one off just yet.
Over the past several seasons, active-wear has slowly been creeping its way into the world of haute couture with fashion elitists pairing sports-inspired apparel with heels, blazers and standout statement jewelry. This trend has evolved to such a place where it’s now being dubbed ‘athleisure’. With that, the tracksuit has undergone a major renovation thanks to fashion powerhouses like Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Chloe. The new, luxury tracksuit look has been embraced whole heartedly by the current crop of hot young millennial ‘it’ girls including Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner.
This season, it’s all about sleek, slouchy trousers and it looks like your skinny jeans may finally be heading into a long overdue state of hibernation. Loosen up with flared or wide leg denim with patchwork detailing, raw hemlines that’s currently dominating the catwalks. It’s a definite throwback that compliments the larger, overall trend of a more relaxed, laid-back fit that’s completely wearable. If your budget doesn’t allow for the updated prefab version, simply dig through your existing library of denim and DIY a pair to include frays, rips and patches.
Outerwear That’s Out Of This World
The best part about the fall is transitioning with the help of a great jacket and this season there are so many great options to choose from. The real standout continues to be the bomber jacket which according to Google’s annual Fashion Trend Report, remains a top search item in 2016. It’s a garment that has extended its military roots far beyond the standard issue uniform and it has evolved into a year round must have. Celebrities including Kanye West and David Beckham love rocking bomber jackets and looking ahead, it’s all about the details. Expect to see unusual colors, embroidery, patchwork and oversized fits. Pair it with a ripped black or dark denim and Chelsea boots for a cool look that’s both funky and functional.;
Other big trends in outerwear for Fall/Winter include shearling trim and graphic fur featured in a variety of shorter, cropped styles. On the flip side, designers Marc Jacobs and Victoria Beckham both showcased outerwear with oversized shapes and silhouettes featuring sloping shoulders and long sleeves. In the meantime, a classic trench is a great go-to for early fall. They are lightweight, rarely lined and never go out of style. The trench-vest is also a fresh twist on a classic look. This sleeveless alternative is the perfect no-brainer layering piece for everyday errands and weekend brunches. Pair with leggings or shredded denim and finish off with a pair of white converse sneakers or suede booties depending on your mood.
