A Life in Politics

As Canada’s first openly gay MP, Svend Robinson’s story would have been noteworthy enough - add in the bizarre circumstances of his departure from politics and you have a must-read story. Biographer Graeme Truelove, who worked as an intern in Robinson’s office, explores the somewhat controversial career in the recently released biography, Svend Robinson: A Life in Politics.

The Screen on Stage

Now that the Shaw Festival Theatre has wrapped up its successful 52nd season, it’s time for its annual film series to begin. With screenings in November through February, the winter film series is the perfect opportunity for people to check out festival-quality feature films in the charming heritage town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Features this year include Philomena, where Judi Dench plays a mother searching for her son put up for adoption 50 years before; Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, a mature drama about never learning from our mistakes; and the coming of age story The Way, Way Back. Visit www.shawfest.com for details.

Do You Hear the People Sing?

Last year it was all about the film adaptation of Les Miserable, this year the production is back where it belongs: on stage. Cameron Mackintosh’s new production offers new staging and dazzlingly reimagined scenery inspired by Victor Hugo’s paintings. Based on Hugo’s classic novel, Les Miserables is an epic and uplifting story about the survival of the human spirit. The run at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto has been extended through February. Tickets at www.mirvish.com.

‘tis the season

Get into the holiday spirit a little early with a visit to the Lowe’s Toronto Christmas Market in the Distillery District. The European-inspired festival, running Nov. 29-Dec. 15, features live music, mulled wine and beer gardens, unique and local handcrafted products, and an extensive selection of culinary delights. With free admission, it’s no surprise the festival sees an estimated quarter of a million visitors each year. www.torontochristmasmarket.com.
