First Openly Gay Disney Character Coming Soon to a Theatre Near You
Not that we need another reason to see Beauty and the Beast!
The family-friendly giant, Walt Disney Co, will be introducing an openly gay character in their much-anticipated live-action remake of “Beauty and the Beast”. This will mark the first time that there’s ever been an openly gay character in one of Disney’s films.
Beauty and the Beast director, Bill Condon, revealed in an interview with Attitude magazine that the sexuality of Gaston’s sidekick, LeFou will be explored in a small but important subplot. LeFou has always been Gaston's henchman—and his PR man; He's the one who gets the townspeople dance on tables, while chugging bear, and singing about Gaston's thick neck and cleft chin.
“LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston,” Condon told the magazine. “He’s confused about what he wants. It’s somebody who’s just realizing that he has these feelings.”
Josh Gad gives a great performance
Actor Josh Gad will be playing the part of LeFou in the film. When commenting on Josh’s portrayal of the character, Condon made it clear that he was happy with his performance saying that, “Josh makes something really subtle and delicious out of it. And that’s what has its payoff at the end, which I don’t want to give away. But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.”
Disney has been LGBT friendly for decades
Disney is known for being progressive when it comes to being gay-friendly. They started offering its gay employees and their partners health insurance benefits all the way back in 1995. Disney World has also hosted a number of gay-pride events since 1991.
Many people feel as though this is not the first time Disney has tried to introduce a gay subplot into one of their films. There has been much speculation from fans about Elsa’s sexuality from the movie Frozen, with the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend popping up all over in a twitter campaign aimed at having a girlfriend for Elsa written in to Frozen 2.
Regardless of what direction Disney decides to take Elsa in; LeFou has already been confirmed as the first openly gay character in a Disney film.
“Beauty and the Beast” opens in theaters March 17 and is expected to be a blockbuster hit for Disney. This will be very welcome given the first-quarter results it reported earlier in the month. For Disney, the poor revenue report comes at a time when its other properties are struggling.
