Fall is one of the most beautiful times of the year and an even better time for fabulous fashion. It’s a season of duality, when polar opposites in our wardrobe come together, often creating a truly unexpected and innovative new look. For this reason, and countless others, it really is my absolute favorite season. The unexpected changes in the weather mean that there is a much broader range in your wardrobe this time of year than there is for any other season. It is this element of the unknown that creates an opportunity for your strong sense of individual style to take front and centre.

Dramatic Outwear

When it comes to head turning outerwear this fall, the bolder the better! There has never been a better time to invest in an amazing coat or jacket. This perfect transitional piece is an absolute staple for every fall season. There are definite subtle elements of both drama and elegance with a modern twist this season. Designers including Balenciaga and Stella McCartney sent bold, belted, and perfectly cinched single and double breasted silhouettes down the runway this season with an overwhelmingly positive response.

The drama is in the details as both bold structured and drop shoulders are definite trends for fall 2013. Extra long cuffs, oversized lapels and gigantic buttons also help reinforce the effect and are making this season’s most talked about coats impossible to ignore.

The only potential problem is that this trend doesn’t always translate from the runway, to the everyday. Over the years, style conscious consumers have become accustomed to a more fitted, tailored look when it comes to outerwear. Luckily, mainstream retailers such as TopShop, H&M and Zara are adapting various elements from this look without going overboard. The result is you’ll still be able to try out a scaled-down version of this trend to determine if it’s right for you.

Sharp Leather

Whenever someone asks me what I think is the one thing everyone should have in their wardrobe, my answer is always the same: a fantastic leather jacket. Leather is just one those timeless things that has the potential to look great on just about anyone. Leather looks can be incredibly diverse and can bring an element of edge to an otherwise conservative outfit. They can dress your look up, or make it more casual cool. The love for leather has reached beyond the traditional biker jacket and has spilled over into everything from leather pants and leggings, to baseball caps, tops and sophisticated pencil skirts. No matter what your goal is, there is definitely a leather look just for you.

Channel Your Inner Punk

In May of this year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute hosted “Punk: Chaos to couture” which focused on the connection between some of music history’s most iconic bands and their connection to pioneering designers with a penchant for punk flare. As a result, the punk look is set to be one of the biggest trends for fall 2013. The best part is you’ll be able to showcase your inner rebel this season while still maintaining a cause for fashion.

The punk trend has definitely had its time in the spotlight. So you might be asking, what’s so different this time around? There is a definite new modern twist to the look that still manages to maintain the angst-ridden heritage of the traditional punk look. Expect to see lots of aforementioned leather, heavy hardware including chains and sexy, studded looks paying homage to some of the greats including David Bowie, The Ramones and The Sex Pistols.

Designers including Yves Saint Laurent and BCBG have helped boost the grunge revival profile with their fall runway shows. Top celebrities everywhere including Rihanna, Gwen Stefani and the current manifestation of Miley Cyrus have already been championing this must-have look all summer long.

Recently, this has been seen in the form of a thermal plaid shirt tied at the waist and often paired with denim cutoffs and combat boots. Plaid is definitely nothing new and has been a consistent trend for fall/winter year after year. Lately though, the plaid we’re seeing is less hipster chic and more reminiscent of early 90’s Seattle grunge with a definite edge. We’ll likely see more of this growing trend as the cold weather approaches.

Finish Off The Look

The best part about keeping warm is doing it in style! Everything is bigger and bolder this season and statement scarves are no exception. Whether you’re draping them like a well worn blanket or twisting and knotting them, bold neckwear is a great way for guys and gals to up the game of an existing look this season.

While beanies have been a wardrobe staple for many years, this season they are a fashion statement must when it comes to dressing up any fall look. Like it or not, beanies are definitely in and were front and centre during some of the biggest fall runway shows as everyone from Isabel Marant to Kate Spade were seen topping off their looks with cozy knitwear. This is no doubt in part thanks to the resurgence of the 90’s grunge trend. Just remember, there is no need to lose your head and break the bank this season as this can be an inexpensive way to stay warm and stay in style over the coming months.

Finally, finishing the look from head to toe we cannot forget some on trend footwear. Combat boots are one trend that shows no signs of slowing down thanks in large part to the punk and grunge themed runways of fall 2013. This is a look that I would really recommend for guys everywhere as it’s proved to be a trend that works year after year and can take you from one season to the next during those awkward, transitional times. You can dress them up or down for a stylish, effortless look that’s all your own. For the ladies, last year we saw a lot of slouchy, roomier styles but this year boots are cleaning up their act. The new look is largely knee high, leather boots with a streamlined cut which hugs the leg tightly. So put your best foot forward and invest in a great pair of quality leather finish.

In the end, let the weather and your fashion ‘gut’ dictate what’s right for you. The yo-yoing temperatures will surely give you every opportunity to explore the full extent of your fall fashion palate. Take a risk, step it up and step out this season with confidence.

In the end, it’s really up to you and how you plan to edit your existing wardrobe while introducing those must-have new pieces for a fresh look this fall. keep that in mind as you write your own style story for the changing months ahead.
