Winter Travel Tips & Advice
Travel planning specialists are frequently asked how to have the most worry-free travel experience.
Here are our tips on preparing for your next vacation; including questions, decisions and preparations once you decide where to go.
What are the most important elements of your upcoming vacation? Are you looking for an all-inclusive resort where you can soak up the sun on a great beach or do you want to a cultural experience where you mix with the locals? Do you want to be treated as a couple if you are travelling with a same-sex partner? Are you travelling with parents, children, or friends with benefits? These are some of the questions we ask to determine what kind of vacation you are looking for to ensure that our recommendations are right for you.
WHERE TO GO:
If you are looking for warm gay-friendly and welcoming destinations, our favourite sun recommendations with direct flights include: Caribbean islands Curacao, St. Maarten/St. Martin, and St. Barts. US sun cities with large local LGBT nightlife include Key West, Fort Lauderdale and Palm Springs. All have accommodations that accommodate a range of budgets, travel dates, and activities. Mexico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic offer the best value all-inclusive packages if you are looking to stay at your resort, but be sure to check that they welcome LGBT couples as policies can vary.
WHEN TO BOOK:
Generally, early booking provides you with the best options – early booking bonuses, guaranteed price protection, and value-added incentives all provide you with financial incentives to lock in early. When you book early with a travel agent you have the option of choosing from the most available options and having your booking held with a small deposit.
Last minute deals are available at properties with excess inventory – the price can be great, but you always need to question why. The property may not be selling due to renovations, bad reviews, location, or a change in management. Read between the lines of online reviews. A good travel agent can find out why a resort has been discounted and give you the full story on the true value you are receiving.
If you make your own arrangements, be sure to read and fully understand all terms and conditions of your booking to ensure you or your group will meet the set requirements.
If you don’t want to fly, consider a driving vacation where you can explore secondary destinations at your leisure. Mapping out your trip beforehand ensures you have unique experiences, and advance booking of over-night stops in advance saves you time and money.
Drive-cruise vacations provide the opportunity to enjoy your journey to your departure port at your leisure – just make sure that you arrive the night before your cruise departs so that your transition to your ship is worry-free.
Booking a trip as a group can bring savings, extras for everyone, and more accommodation choices. A vacation home or villa that has shared common space and private bedrooms may feature beautiful private views, a more luxurious experience and more personal freedom than you will find in a hotel.
GIFTS: If bringing gifts, do not wrap them. Airport security may rip your beautiful wrapping during inspection, so bring wrapping paper and tape and create your fabulous gift after you arrive.
CONNECTIONS: You can save on flight costs by taking connecting flights, but keep in mind that snow storms can delay flights. Better to make connections at warm weather hubs if possible.
CURRENCY: Always bring $50 in local currency with you, for things like tips, taxis, transfers and unforeseen purchases when you arrive. Check whether you must pay arrival or departure tax and what currency it must be paid in.
PASSPORTS: Many countries require that your passport be valid for a minimum of 6 months beyond your stay. Check your renewal dates and if Visas are required, and give yourself plenty of time for the paperwork to be processed.
CARRY-ON ESSENTIALS: While you need to check most personal items when taking longer trips, you should always bring a carry-on bag with a day’s supplies and change of clothes. Medication should be packed in its original containers. If you are travelling with children, give them the responsibility and the honour of wheeling their own carry-on.
DOCUMENTS: Store your important documents (passport, flight documents, vouchers and confirmations in one special and secure place. Create a travel summary including emergency contacts, drivers licence, credit card, health and insurance information.
Make copies of all your essential information, carry one copy with you, leave one copy at home, and email another copy to yourself at a universally accessible email address. If you are travelling with a companion, trade information so that you have the ability to assist each other in case of emergency.
BEING SPORTY: If you plan to surf, dive or golf on your vacation, you may prefer to bring your own equipment rather than risk renting. Airline policies for transporting sports equipment can vary widely, so check their website to see what restrictions and charges exist prior to booking.
HIV TRAVEL: People who are HIV positive can travel freely to most places in the world, however there are a number of countries that will deny entry if HIV medication is discovered in your luggage. Some travel insurance policies require that you disclose your status. Access and restrictions can vary widely, so consult hivtravel.org, the global database on HIV-specific travel and residence restrictions as part of your travel research.
FINALLY: Buy travel insurance, even if you have credit card related insurance protection. Travel insurance is comprehensive and can help you out of a jam, depending on the protection you purchase. A sudden fall can cost you thousands of dollars if you are without coverage. Some countries now require that you carry proof of insurance when you enter.
Wherever you land on your holiday, the planning and research you do in advance will increase your relaxation time away. And that’s the whole point of a vacation, isn't it?
